  • Jose Mourinho has enjoyed a glittering career as a manager starting with extraordinary success at Porto in his native Portugal before moving on to Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, back to Chelsea and now Manchester United.

At Chelsea, he enjoyed great success – with three titles over his two separate spells – but his clashes against Chelsea have been more mixed, especially the Blues under current manager, and regular sparring partner, Antonio Conte.

In all Mourinho has faced Chelsea six times as opposing manager (at two different clubs) for three wins and three losses.

Here, we breakdown Mourinho’s record vs Chelsea.

    Champions League 2009/10

At his first attempt coaching against his former club, Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge in triumph as Inter Milan sent Chelsea crashing out of the Champions League.

Samuel Eto’s clinical strike 11 minutes from time settled a scrappy second leg and sealed a place in the quarter-finals for Mourinho at the expense of the club he left in 2007 after a hugely successful three-and-a-half years.

And the misery for Chelsea and coach Carlo Ancelotti was complete when Didier Drogba was sent off in the closing minutes after a penalty area clash with Thiago Motta.

Mourinho’s Inter Milan would go on to defeat CSKA Moscow and Barcelona on the way to a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the final to give him his second Champions League crown – the first won at Porto in 2003/04.

Mourinho made his first visit back to Chelsea with Manchester United since leaving in December 2015 – and only his second in his managerial career.

It was a crucial match for both clubs as United sat two points behind Chelsea in the table.

It could not have gone any worse for the Portuguese as his side were hammered 4-0, through goals from Pedro, Gary Cahill, man of the match Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante, with Antonio Conte giving him a tactical masterclass.

During the match Mourinho was even humiliated by chants from his once-beloved Chelsea fans of “You’re not special anymore.”

“It is one of those days when you give the advantage to opponents by doing nothing,” said Mourinho afterwards.

If Mourinho’s second trip back to Stamford Bridge was uncomfortable – this was a nightmare.

Mourinho was involved in repeated touchline clashes with opposite number Antonio Conte and was verbally abused by Chelsea fans at the scene of many of his triumphs, including three titles.

The reason for much of Mourinho’s ire was the sending off of Ander Herrera 10 minutes before half-time after a second foul on Eden Hazard.

The managers even had to be kept apart moments later after Marcos Alonso tumbled to the floor after being brought down.

The stormy FA Cup quarter-final was decided by an unlikely source, Kante’s second-half winner, his second goal against United in consecutive matches.

Mourinho was seething after the match. “Everybody can analyse from different perspectives but we all watch the match until the red card and after the red card,” he said.

“So we can compare the decisions of the two yellow cards, in this case with others which were not given.”

    Finally revenge for Mourinho.

After already suffering two losses in the season against the club where he was a three-time champion, losing 4-0 in the league and also going out of the FA Cup quarter-final, both at Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese was desperate to turn it around at Old Trafford.

And he was not to be denied this time as Marcus Rashford finished coolly after seven minutes and Ander Herrera – assigned to do a brilliant man-marking job on Eden Hazard – saw his shot deflected in off Kurt Zouma four minutes after the break.

In more joy for Mourinho, it cut Chelsea’s lead at the top of the Premier League to only four points and threw the title race wide open again after they were well beaten by a resurgent United.

Afterwards a beaming Mourinho denied he enoyed the victory more because it was against Chelsea and his nemesis Conte.

“I’m really happy with the boys” he said.

“I’m happy – it’s not because it’s Chelsea, it’s because we need these three points. I don’t feel extra joy at beating Chelsea – we beat the leader.

“It doesn’t matter if the leader is Chelsea or another – we beat them convincingly. Nobody can doubt our credit to win the game.”

More pain at the Bridge for Mourinho as Alvaro Morata scored his first goal since September as Chelsea deservedly beat Manchester United to move a point behind the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Morata escaped the attentions of United’s defenders to find yards of space and beat goalkeeper David de Gea from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross in the 55th minute.

The loss left United eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

“It frustrates us to concede a goal in this situation,” said Mourinho.

“We lost ourselves after the goal emotionally. We found again the balance and desire in the last 15 to 20 minutes.

“It was all us. We had big chances to equalise but we couldn’t.”
