  • Defeat to Spurs has left Chelsea with two defeats from three games.

Chelsea‘s unbeaten start to the Premier League is over after they slumped to a stunning defeat against derby rivals Tottenham.

The Blues’ defence was torn apart in the 3-1 loss, with David Luiz especially at fault, delivering a shocking performance.

Here’s how he and the rest of the players rated.

    STARTING XI

Kepa Arrizabalaga 3 – Not a good day at the office for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. The first goal came with a header that was straight at him, and he should have reacted better for Tottenham’s second.

Cesar Azpilicueta 4 – One of Azpilicueta’s worst performances in a Chelsea shirt, as he provided no leadership in a defence that was at sixes and sevens throughout. Deserves credit for the cross he put in for Giroud’s goal, but that was his only meaningful contribution.

Antonio Rudiger 3 – Given a torrid time by Tottenham’s attackers, and couldn’t respond. Lucky not to see red after a second-half tackle on Kane was deemed not worthy of a second yellow card.

David Luiz 0 – This was the sort of performance that usually sees a player get banished to the reserves. The way he moved out of the way of Harry Kane’s shot for Tottenham’s second goal was shocking, and he was guilty again for Spurs’ third.

Marcos Alonso 6 – Delivered some telling crosses, and intervened to prevent a Tottenham goal on more than one occasion. The only defender to emerge with any credit from this performance.

N’Golo Kante 4 – The positional dilemma he faces in Maurizio Sarri’s system continues to rear its head, as he couldn’t do much to help his defenders and failed to have an impact in attack.

Jorginho 4 – Shut down by Tottenham’s midfield, who denied him any time on the ball. It’s the second straight game a team have contained Chelsea by targeting their star midfielder.

Mateo Kovacic 3 – An ill-advised rabona cross in the first half to no one in particular was the highlight, or perhaps low-light, of Kovacic’s performance. Completely ineffective in midfield.

Willian 6 – Looked the most threatening of Chelsea’s forwards – though largely as the best of a bad bunch, rather than through a standout display. Should probably feel miffed that he was the player hauled off to make way for Pedro.

Alvaro Morata 4 – Morata still can’t find top form for Chelsea. He was caught offside far too easily, and lost his battle with the young Juan Foyth, a player he should be dominating.

Eden Hazard 5 – Unlucky not to get at least one penalty, if not two, but otherwise was completely ineffective. The sort of display that will bring back talk about disappearing in big games.

    SUBSTITUTES

Ross Barkley 5 – Barkley will probably start ahead of Kovacic in Chelsea’s next game, but it won’t be for anything he did after coming on. Had almost no impact.

Pedro 4 – Came on to provide a spark, but did little to show he could do so. Despite seeing plenty of the ball, his most effective moment came when he sprinted and dribbled back towards his own goal late in the game.

Olivier Giroud 8 – The former Arsenal man would have been quietly pleased to score against Tottenham, especially as it was his first league goal of the season. Has probably won the starter’s job back from Morata.
