  • Manchester United host Liverpool in the Premier League‘s game of the weekend at Old Trafford.

The result could have big implications on the title race for Liverpool or even the top four battle for United.

As such, the two managers will know their game plan must be spot on and here we look at the key tactics Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may employ

    MATA IN A DIAMOND

Solskjaer suggests both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard remain doubts so while they may have roles to play off the bench, Juan Mata seems likely to feature against Liverpool in an attacking midfield role. United could play a diamond formation as they did in the FA Cup win over Chelsea with the Spaniard hassling Jorginho off the ball and leading the transition on it.

He’ll be expected to perform the same role against Fabinho and Liverpool. The diamond offers United a more compact shape while retaining their threat in the transition – a variation of the system was employed in the victory over Tottenham as well. It also means the front three – along with Ander Herrera – can enforce a high-press without leaving the team exposed in central midfield.

    RASHFORD TO TARGET TAA

Marcus Rashford will have fond memories of facing Trent Alexander-Arnold at Old Trafford. The United man got the better of the full-back in a 2-0 victory at the venue last season and Solskjaer will hope to exploit the same match-up. Expect the in-form forward to peel away to the left and attack the space in behind the defender or the inside left channel during the transition.

With Paul Pogba advancing down that side as well, the duo could link-up well. The Frenchman will be an added threat for Alexander-Arnold as he drifts out to offer width, much like he did for the opening goal at Stamford Bridge.
