  • A goal from Chris Smalling gave England an unconvincing 1-0 victory over 10-man Portugal, who had Bruno Alves sent off in the first half for a flying kung fu-style kick on Harry Kane.

England open their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia on June 11, while Portugal take on Iceland on June 14.

Tottenham striker Kane was among those to talk to media after the match and, looking ahead to England’s Euro 2016 campaign, discussed the possibility of coming up against former Spurs team-mate and current Wales star Gareth Bale,

England’s defence has come under plenty of scrutiny in the build-up to the Euros but Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said he believes the Three Lions’ backline is looking more secure with each passing game.

Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill took the opportunity to talk up the youthful nature of the England squad, which will be the youngest at Euro 2016 by some distance. Cahill also stressed that there are “no egos” in the Three Lions camp.

England coach Roy Hodgson was wary of the criticism the laboured performance against Portugal, but the former Fulham and Liverpool boss said that his side could only beat what was in front of them.
