  • False start: Debuchy injured himself just a month into the new season.

Mathieu Debuchy admits it has been frustrating to watch Arsenal struggle defensively since he was ruled out for three months with ankle ligament damage.

Debuchy, who only joined the Gunners in the summer, was ruled out until Christmas when he was injured in their 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City at the Emirates on September 13.

The crocked French full-back says he joined the North London club to win trophies and still believes his dream of winning silverware can come true in his first season at the club.

Chelsea may lead the Premier League table and are already 12 points better off than their sixth-placed London rivals, but Debuchy is not giving up on the title.

Debuchy was speaking at the Arsenal Soccer Schools in Dubai, where he talked to youngsters learning to replicate Arsene Wenger’s footballing philosophy.

“We don’t fix ourselves limits but we see ourselves going for the highest (position) in the league as possible,” he said.

“When you come to a club like Arsenal it’s because you want to win titles and I hope and believe we can win titles (this season).”

Debuchy is nearing a return to action and hopes he can give Arsenal fans a timely festive treat this Christmas.

“It would be nice (to be back for Christmas). It (the injury) is better and I will hopefully be back in one more month.

“When I signed for Arsenal it was a huge sense of pride and it’s obviously been frustrating, but now I’m hoping to come back stronger. It’s been more frustrating watching from the stands than not being down on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, after a decent World Cup showing in Brazil, Debuchy is looking forward to the future with France.

“I’m very confident,” he said. “We had a good world Cup and we’re all very excited about Euro 2016 in France and being able to progress. I hope (we can win it). We have a good chance”

With the modern-day French revolution taking shape, their chances of future success seem to fall largely at the feet of Juventus’ midfield maestro Paul Pogba.

Debuchy said of Pogba: “I think he will become one of the best players in the world.”

The defender admits Mathieu Flamini and Olivier Giroud, his fellow Frenchmen at Arsenal, have eased his transition into life in the capital, and claims Alexis Sanchez, another one of the club’s summer signings, can play anywhere for the club.

“He (Sanchez) can play a lot of different positions. He can play as a striker or on the wing, he has played well in both. He can play every position, but not right back.”
