  • Every week we pick 22 of the best performing players in Europe’s top five leagues and, with your help, narrow it down to the best XI.

Using polls on our Instagram stories, we pit players in each position against each other and let you decide who deserves to make the cut.

Paulo Dybala features after stepping up for Cristiano Ronaldo while three of the back four are made up of Borussia Dortmund defenders and Real Madrid maestro Toni Kroos makes an appearance, too.

Here’s what our latest European Team of the Week looks like:

    GK: Pepe Reina (Aston Villa)

He conceded three goals in a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham but the veteran keeper’s performance was still top notch. Reina denied Son Heung-min from the penalty spot only for the South Korean to stab home the rebound. He thwarted the forward on three other occasions though and saved brilliantly from Dele Alli’s effort, too. Showed good distribution as well.

    RB: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund)

Two assists for the wing-back took his tally in the Bundesliga to nine, only Jadon Sancho (13) and Thomas Muller (14) have more this season. Hakimi was heavily involved, bombing down the right flank during a 4-0 mauling of Eintracht Frankfurt.

    CB: Lukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund)

Made the breakthrough with a low-drilled effort from the edge of the box. The aging defender put in a fine display as one of three centre-backs and largely cruised through proceedings, leading the way for passes with 99.

    CB: Nianzou Kouassi (Paris Saint-Germain)

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich had scored a whopping 16 goals in their previous four games but Dayot Upamecano led a defence that shut them out. He went toe-to-toe with Robert Lewandowski and won both aerial duels while recovering the ball 10 times and clearing it on eight occasions. Another commanding performance from the young Leipzig defender that will impress his numerous suitors.

    LB: Raphael Gurreiro (Borussia Dortmund)

It would take some effort to upstage Hakimi against Frankfurt and Gurreiro produced one. Thriving in the 3-4-3 system, he was top for dribbles, key passes, interceptions and shots. He scored with a thumping strike from outside the area and even hit the woodwork on one occasion.

    RW: Son Heung-min (Tottenham)

He threatened Aston Villa’s goal regularly and was denied on a number of occasions. Had his penalty saved but managed to score from the rebound. Was gifted an opportunity in the dying moments and showed great composure to snap it up, steering his finish calmly around Reina.

    CM: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)

Continued his good form by dictating play in midfield and playing cross-field passes with ease. Took his goal superbly, steering Marcelo’s cross inside the near post with his left foot. The pass master also impressed on the other side of the ball, making a game-high four tackles in a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo.

    CM: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio)

In a crucial encounter with Inter Milan, Milinkovic-Savic’s quality came to the fore. He dominated in midfield and drove Lazio forward. A rasping effort in the first half rattled the crossbar before he manipulated the space in a crowded penalty box expertly to score the winner.

    LW: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich)

Could well have had a hat-trick if not for the woodwork intervening. Danced across the back-line before driving in his first before scoring with a sublime finish to cap a 4-0 victory over Koln.

    ST: Suso (Sevilla)

Scored the first and set up the second as Sevilla were held to a 2-2 draw against Espanyol. He ran the show for the hosts, playing six key passes – three of which were big chances – during the game and completing five dribbles.

    ST: Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

In Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, Dybala was the chief threat throughout, evidenced by his staggering numbers from their 2-0 win over Brescia. He registered eight shots – more than double anyone else managed – and six key passes. His brilliant free-kick gave Juventus the lead and he even struck the frame of the goal.
