Patriotic midfielder Rayan Yaslam has declared he will be present to “raise the flag” for the UAE at the 2019 Asian Cup, despite injury forcing his cruel late withdrawal from the hosts’ squad.

Yaslam, 24, was replaced by Fujairah forward Mohammed Khalfan on Sunday in coach Alberto Zaccheroni’s 23-man squad. This disappointing outcome – a week before the tournament opener against Bahrain at Zayed Sports City – followed a fragmented club campaign, during which the Al Ain prospect has been able to make only nine Arabian Gulf League appearances.

“It is the duty of all to serve the UAE and to sacrifice for it,” he said. “Every one of the people of this country must be keen to support the team, both in their positions and according to their ability.

“The players are required to work hard from inside the stadium to raise the flag of our country and the masses to lift it. They play a significant role, supporting and encouraging.

“After the injury prevented me from putting in my effort on the pitch, I will move directly to the stands to continue my mission in the service of the homeland.

“I will play my role in supporting and encouraging my fellow players, to contribute to providing a better atmosphere that helps the players to do their best to achieve the set aspirations.”

Yaslam had been fit enough to start December 22’s Club World Cup final loss to Real Madrid, then train with the Whites at Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex.

He was, however, unable to prove his fitness to Zaccheroni.

The ex-AC Milan, Juventus and Japan tactician has now turned to Khalfan.

An impressive three goals have been registered in nine top-flight run-outs this term by the 26-year-old for his promoted employers.

This marks a return to form for a player whose early promise saw only personal issues derail an historic August 2014 switch to Portugal’s Braga.
