  • Brazil squeezed through to the Copa America semi-final thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory following a goalless draw against dogged 10-man Paraguay.

Liverpool keeper Alisson was the hero by saving the first penalty of the shoot-out from Gustavo Gomez, before Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus held his nerve and stepped up to convert the decisive 12-yarder.

But it was far from convincing from the hosts, with several players looking off colour.

Check out the full player ratings here.

    BRAZIL

Alisson 7. Stood strong to make a good save at his near post from Gonzalez and saved the opening kick of the shoot-out.

Alves 6. Surged forward in his usual cavalier style but wasn’t always precise in his distribution and sometimes looked vulnerable defensively.

Marquinhos 7. A first half spot of dithering nearly gifted Paraguay an opportunity but he was otherwise assured and progressive.

Thiago 7. Strong defensively and often pushed forward as an extra man in midfield after Paraguay were reduced to ten men.

Luis 6. Showed some clever passing, creating a first half chance for Coutinho, but was replaced at half-time after being cautioned.

Allan 6. Bright blue protective headband was the most eye-catching aspect of an unfussy performance before being replaced.

Arthur 7. Everything went through Brazil’s conductor in the centre of midfield but he was slowed down by a poor, uneven playing surface.

Jesus 6. An often frustrating evening on the right of Brazil’s attack, failing to offer penetration, before he netted the decisive spot-kick to make amends.

Coutinho 4. Had an angled shot saved just before the break, but too many loose touches and didn’t do enough to lead his team.

Everton 6. Bright down the left early on, but couldn’t maintain that impact. Fired a great chance over the bar deep inside stoppage time.

Firmino 5. Linked play well but sent a good early chance straight at the keeper and fired another wide, before missing his penalty.

    Subs

Sandro 6. Half-time entrant in place of Luis at left-back, adding a burst of pace. Solid without doing anything spectacular.

Willian 7. Came on for the final stages to add thrust down the right, and nearly grabbed a last minute winner with a low strike against the post.

Paqueta 6. Final roll of the dice for Tite, the youngster looked bright in his few minutes on the pitch.

    PARAGUAY

Fernandez 8. Made a handful of routine saves from half-hit efforts, and a brilliant stop from a close-range header in the latter stages.

Piris 8. Tenacious defensive display in the right-back position, including a goal-saving block on a late strike by Everton.

Gomez 7. Made a key penalty box challenge to deny Firmino and was a model of discipline at the back, but missed the opening penalty of the shoot-out.

Balbuena 5. Generally solid in the centre of defence until he was caught out of position to earn a red card with a desperate challenge on Firmino.

Alonso 6. Struggled for pace and looked a weak link at the back, picking up a first half booking, but battled on with determination.

Perez 6. Espanyol winger battled hard up and down the right flank, doing a good supportive job defensively. Subbed after 75 minutes.

Sanchez 7. Showed energy and ability in the centre of midfield, catching the eye with his quality on the ball and covering plenty of ground.

Ortiz 7. Played a solid spoiler role in defensive midfield, closing down the space for Coutinho around the edge of the penalty area.

Arzamendia 6. Booked for a cynical first half foul, sacrificed after his team were reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Balbuena.

Almiron 6. Tried to link midfield with attack and showed some flashes of class, also working hard without the ball.

Gonzalez 6. Worked hard to lead the line and nearly scored with an angled shot from close range. Flashed his penalty wide in the shoot-out.

    Subs

Valdez 7. Introduced an an extra defender following the expulsion of Balbuena. Manned the fort well.

Rojas 6. Came on for the last 15 minutes and worked hard to help his team force the game to penalties.

Escobar 6. A late addition to further bolster the back line in the final stages, and had a shot deflected wide on the break.
