  • Lionel Messi celebrates for Barcelona

Lionel Messi, Toni Kroos and Cristiano Ronaldo lead the way for the top performing players from Europe’s top-five leagues in the last three months.

CIES Football Observatory, who have measured the performances of each player taking into account rigour, recovery, distribution, take on, chance creation and shooting, ranked Barcelona’s Messi as the top performing player.

Only players who have played at least 45 minutes in eight championship games during the last three months have been included, with the rankings broken down into positions. The results obtained by each player’s club were also taken into consideration as a weighting factor.

Messi leads the way overall and in the winger rankings, while Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and Kroos are top of the forward and defensive midfielder charts respectively. Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris (goalkepeers) and Christian Eriksen (box-to-box midfielders) head the table in their positions, while Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Mario Rui are leading the way for centre-backs and full-backs.

Messi’s rating of 93.7 is the highest overall, with Kroos receiving a score of 92.8 and Ronaldo a further two points back on 90.8. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is behind Messi in the wingers table, with a score of 89.9, while Gonzalo Higuain (87.4) and Harry Kane (87.1) are the two forwards closest to Ronaldo in the rankings.
