  • Messi hasn't played since last year's World Cup.

Lionel Messi is set to return for his national team in March, Goal has revealed.

The Argentina talisman has been on a self-imposed exile since the team’s disappointing World Cup campaign last summer, with some wondering if Messi wanted to retire from international duty altogether.

Though the player has not made an announcement regarding his return, Goal are reporting that Messi will feature in Argentina’s friendly against Venezuela on March 22 in Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

Messi is Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer and sits third on the list for all-time appearances with 128, but his lack of trophies with his national team has always led to a sense of disappointment over his international career, especially after the latest World Cup exit, which ended with a 4-3 loss to eventual champions France.

Before last summer’s tournament, Messi had also lost in a major final four different times with Argentina.

Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria, who like Messi had not featured for ‘La Albiceleste’ since the World Cup, are also set to return in the same fixture.
