  • David de Gea's future remains up in the air.

Manchester United may exercise their option on a one-year extension to star goalkeeper David de Gea‘s contract six months earlier planned, according to The Sun, as talks over a new deal have stalled.

De Gea has reportedly been offered a contract worth £375,000 per week once all incentives are taken into account, which would make him the second-highest-paid player at the club behind Alexis Sanchez.

However, he is yet to put pen to paper on the deal, with the Spaniard said to be waiting to see how the club progresses over the next few months before making a long-term commitment.

The 27-year-old is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world, and has been named the club’s player of the year in four of the last five seasons.

It was thought that Thibaut Courtois’ move to Real Madrid this summer would put an end to speculation over De Gea’s future as well, as he was often linked to the La Liga giants and indeed saw a move infamously collapse at the last minute during the 2015 summer window.

Both United and De Gea are reportedly optimistic over a deal being agreed, but the club do not want to risk one of their biggest stars entering next season with just a year left on his current contract. The club option to extend that contract by a year would see such a scenario being avoided.
