  • Anthony Martial has been in good form for United of late.

Manchester United and Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero was had positive words for his club team-mate Anthony Martial and also made a rather forbidden comparison, to Lionel Messi.

Apart from their time together at United, Romero and Martial were team-mates at Monaco in the 2013/14 season when the Argentine was on loan.

The goalkeeper told United’s official website : “He really is one of the best I’ve seen. I think that the only player in the world, or who I’ve seen, running with the ball as if it’s stuck to his foot, is Leo Messi.

“He can be going at top speed and the ball is always right on the end of his foot, it never gets far away from his control. That’s why he can do all the things he does.

The custodian praised Martial’s run and mentioned that the unique style of running with the ball stuck at his feet reminded him of his national team-mate.

Messi’s trademark body-feints and change in pace which allows him to get past his markers is almost unparalleled, but Romero sees these elements in Martial

He said: “That is the same as what Messi does. Leo will be running with the ball, on a mazy dribble, and then all of a sudden he’ll stop suddenly and change pace or change speed, or go the other side.

“Anthony can do that with ease and in fact he has done it many times. He dribbles the ball one way, stops suddenly and then goes the other.”

The Frenchman has been in incredible form at United and was rightly adjudged as their player of the month. The Red Devils face tougher challenges ahead in Juventus and Manchester City and Martial’s influence will be key.
