  • Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez may be out for “six to eight weeks” following a knee injury sustained during the side’s 3-2 win over Southampton on Saturday.

United’s own medical team have yet to provide an update on the 30-year-old’s fitness, but Onate, who examined the injury, says Sanchez suffered a “distention of the medial ligament”.

It’s the latest setback in Sanchez’s short United career after arriving last January. Heralded as great signing at the time, the former Arsenal and Barcelona man has struggled to make an impact as injuries and a lack of form have robbed him of confidence, and he’s managed just five goals and eight assists in 41 appearances for the Red Devils.

There are concerns from the Chile camp over United No 7’s chances of being fit in time for this summer’s Copa America, though Onate was quick to brush those away.

“There won’t be any problems for him to be at the Copa [America], because he’ll be out for between six and eight weeks,” Onate told Chile daily El Mercurio.

“Alexis may even play again before that time. Plus, there’s a long way to go until the Copa America.

“The distention of the medial ligament is an annoying injury, but it’s not so complex.”
