Manchester United‘s disappointing start to the Premier League season continued at St Mary’s where they were held to a 1-1 draw against ten-man Southampton.
Daniel James was in great form and opened the scoring with a fantastic strike in the 10th minute. However, the visitors were unable to push on and secure the win with Jannik Vestergaard heading home the equaliser just before the hour-mark.
Kevin Danso was handed his marching orders when a lunge on Scott McTominay earned him his second booking with over 15 minutes to play.
United were unable to capitalise on the man advantage though and had to settle for a point.
Here, we rate the each of United’s players.
STARTING XI (4-2-3-1)
David De Gea 6 – Could’ve tried to punch the cross away for the equaliser but otherwise had a solid game.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Almost like he gives the ball away just so he can win it back. Made a game-high 10 tackles.
Victor Lindelof 4 – Looked suspect and lost the ball a few times. Was no match for Vestergaard who towered above him to score the equaliser.
Harry Maguire 7 – Calm and assured at the back. He’s going to need some help at some point though.
Ashley Young 5 – Had a couple of shaky moments, particularly with his passing but defensively, seemed to be an improvement on Luke Shaw.
Scott McTominay 6 – One of United’s better players and went on a good run before setting up James for the opener.
Paul Pogba 6 – Always looked capable of making something happen but needs someone to feed him the ball instead of being the distributor.
Andreas Pereira 4 – Dwelled on the ball far too often and ended up losing it repeatedly.
Juan Mata 5 – Started well but faded in the second half. Tried to force the issue with some wayward passes.
Daniel James 8 – His best game yet? Absolute stunner to break the deadlock and was United’s chief threat throughout.
Marcus Rashford 3 – His worst game yet? Nothing he tried came off. Had a couple of decent shots at the death but that was about it.
SUBS
Jesse Lingard (68′) 4 – A typically frustrating display. Did some good things until he messed them up with bizarre decision-making.
Nemanja Matic (68′) 6 – Brought some control in midfield when he came on. Received the ball and distributed it well.
Mason Greenwood (82′) N/A – Looked lively and had spectators gasping when he cut inside and his curled effort was saved by Angus Gunn.
