  • A disappointing Manchester United performance at West Ham United ended in a 2-0 defeat for the visitors.

Andriy Yarmolenko’s fine strike broke the deadlock just before half-time and a late Aaron Cresswell free-kick secured the three points.

The result means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won just twice in six Premier League games this season.

Here, we rate the performances of the United players.

    STARTING XI (4-2-3-1)

David De Gea 5 – Made a good save to deny Felipe Anderson. Looked more assured than in recent times.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Strong as ever defensively and grew as an attacking threat in the second half but final ball was lacking.

Victor Lindelof 4 – Played Yarmolenko onside for the opening goal. Didn’t have much defending to do but was poor in possession.

Harry Maguire 6 – Had a glorious chance to equalise from close range but his effort was straight at Fabianski. Solid at the back.

Ashley Young 4 – Never looked comfortable defending one-on-one. Wayward with his crossing.

Nemanja Matic 4 – His immobility made him a liability in midfield as West Ham were able to stroll through the middle. Didn’t close down Noble at all in the build up to the goal.

Scott McTominay 6 – Stood out in midfield with his energy and drive. Didn’t have the range of passing United needed though to exert any control on the game.

Andreas Pereira 5 – Played one superb cross which should’ve been an assist and closed down opponents well but gave the ball away too often.

Juan Mata 3 – Should never have started. Put an excellent chance for an equaliser wide. Slowed down the game considerably.

Daniel James 6 – Full marks for effort and very often looked like United’s most potent threat. Little service to work with though.

Marcus Rashford 4 – Another poor display from the striker as he lost his bearings at crucial moments. Did seem to be carrying an injury and went off on the hour mark.

    Juan Mata

    SUBS

Jesse Lingard (61′) 4 – Came on for Rashford but was not much of an improvement.

Fred (71′) 5 – Not great but still a significant step up to Matic. Even played James clean through on one occasion.

Angel Gomes (81′) N/A – Didn’t have enough time to make an impact but was good in tight spaces and looked more threatening in 10 minutes than Mata did in 80.
