  • Zidane insists Madrid can retain the Champions League once again.

A defiant Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid can still win the Champions League despite their current slump.

Real are fourth in LaLiga, 19 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona, and were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by unheralded Leganes on Wednesday.

Europe has been their respite this season as they qualified from their group with forward Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first player ever to score in all six games.

And Zidane, with pressure mounting on his position as head coach, is aiming high in the continental arena.

“I will not, and we will not, accept the situation,” he said at a press conference reported on the club’s website ahead of Saturday’s league game against Valencia.

“We will keep working and will redress the situation, I am telling you.

“We can win the Champions League and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”

Zidane led Real to Champions League glory in each of his first two seasons as a head coach and is bidding for an unprecedented hat-trick.

The former France international and Real player maintains he is not concerned about his personal future and feels he still has the respect of his squad.

“If I thought I couldn’t get through to the players, I would go tomorrow,” he said. “It is part of football, you have good moments and bad moments.

“Wednesday was a very, very bad moment but you have to accept it and pick yourself up. There are worse things in life.

“I have the desire to change the situation. I feel strong enough to change things, if not it would be a problem.

“I am not happy to be criticised, of course, but that’s the game – when you are not getting results, when negative things happen, you have to accept (the criticism).

“It will not stop me continuing to do what I do and thinking that I can change the situation.”
