  • Iniesta has sympathy for former Spain and Real coach Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui remains defiant in his dedication to Real Madrid despite speculation that he may lose his job in the near future.

Los Blancos have struggled in their La Liga campaign so far this season and a 2-1 loss at home to Levante on Saturday only compounded their misery.

It’s now five games without a victory at the Santiago Bernabeu for Madrid with Marcelo’s consolation goal finally ending a 464-minute dry spell for the team – their longest run without a goal since 1985.

Levante scored twice in the opening 13 minutes and held on for the victory as reports suggest Antonio Conte is being lined up to replace Lopetegui imminently.

Asked about his future, the former Spain national team coach said: “This is the last thing I am thinking about. I am only thinking about lifting the players quickly.

“We have a very important game in the Champions League in three days.”

Madrid welcome Viktoria Plzen to the Bernabeu on Tuesday, looking to recover from a 1-0 defeat by CSKA Moscow in their previous fixture. They then face Barcelona away in El Clasico on Sunday.

“I feel more encouraged than ever, I believe more than ever in this team,” Lopetegui said.

“For the effort they have made and for how they have reacted to their misfortune. The team has left everything on the pitch and this is the way to turn the corner, there is no other way.”

Lopetegui conceded that the changing room was not a great place to be in the aftermath of the defeat and claims luck was not on their side.

“It is clear that it is not deserved,” Lopetegui added. “But football is won by goals, not merit. We have done everything we think we have to do.”
