  • Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game as Real Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

The La Liga victory at the Santiago Bernabeu took the hosts to within two points of city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Vallecano only threatened Madrid’s goal at the death but Santiago Solari’s side were able to see out the win.

Here, we rate the performances of Madrid’s players.

    STARTING XI (4-3-3)

Thibaut Courtois – Vallecano did have a few ventures forward but none resulted in a test for the Madrid custodian until stoppage-time when he earned his clean sheet with a double save. 7

Dani Carvajal – Not much to do defensively. Had some good moments bombing forward but final ball was missing. 6

Raphael Varane – A mere spectator as the screen behind the more proactive Sergio Ramos. Near-perfect with his passing. 6

Sergio Ramos – Led the back-line well and had a goal ruled out for offside. An assured display from the skipper. 7

Marcelo – Constantly involved in attack but tried to be over-elaborate and ended up losing the ball often. 6

Toni Kroos – A commanding performance from the German, getting wide and delivering some delicious balls in. Superb in possession and struck the upright with a ferocious effort. 7

Marcos Llorente – Clearly growing into this anchorman role, looking more comfortable with every game. 6

Luka Modric – One of his better displays this season as he was a creative force from midfield. A moment of magic should’ve led to a goal for Marco Asensio. 6

Lucas Vazquez – Provides a different dimension to Real’s attack, generation more width. Excellent assist for the goal and another good shift. 7

Karim Benzema – Started and finished the move for the only goal expertly. Had a couple more encouraging moments before limping off. 7

Marco Asensio – Another frustrating game for the youngster despite coming close on a couple of occasions. 5

    SUBS

Dani Ceballos (71′) – Replaced Asensio and played more central, leaving Madrid’s attack lacking width. 5

Vinicius Junior (78′) – Eager as ever when introduced but nothing to contribute apart from some fancy footwork. N/A

Federico Valverde (90′ + 1′) – On for the final few seconds. N/A
