  • Vinicius Junior suffered an injury in early March.

Real Madrid have been dealt another blow to their miserable season after announcing forward Vinicius Junior has torn ligaments in his right ankle.

The 18-year-old hobbled off the pitch in tears on Tuesday night as the Spanish club saw their Champions League defence dramatically ended with a 4-1 home defeat to Ajax in the second leg of their last 16 clash.

Further investigation has now revealed the extent of the injury, which reports suggest could sideline the Brazilian for two months.

“After tests today by the medical team at Real Madrid, our player Vinicius Jr has been diagnosed with a torn ligament of the tibiofibular joint in the right leg,” read a statement on the club’s website.

Madrid’s Champions League exit, a 5-3 aggregate loss to Ajax, saw them surrender the trophy they had won for the last three seasons.

Their La Liga campaign has also been a disappointment to date, with defeat to leaders Barcelona in last weekend’s El Clasico leaving them third in the table, 12 points behind their bitter rivals.
