Is Kalidou Koulibaly on his way to Real Madrid?

Reports suggest that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has his eyes set on Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, should Raphael Varane choose to leave the club in the summer.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move out of the Spanish capital and Premier League giants Manchester United are said to be in pole position to sign the defender.

Should this move materialise, Koulibaly could wear the Los Blancos jersey next season, AS reports.

Zidane has been a long-time admirer of the Senegal international. Madrid could face competition from the likes of Juventus and Manchester United.

Transfermarkt has valued the defender at €70 million, but the Spanish giants could end up spending more than that.

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has publicly stated that Koulibaly will not be sold.

The defender’s release clause amounts to €150m as of 2020, which means that Madrid will have to break their bank to secure the player.

Alvaro Odriozola

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Odriozola considers Zinedine Zidane’s return as Los Blancos boss as winning a trophy.

The full-back admitted that the Frenchman was his idol growing up and is happy to be able to play under him.

“I’m from San Sebastian and I’ve always been a La Real fan, although I did like Real Madrid because Zidane played there and he was my idol,” Odriozola told La Galerna.

“When he took over, we talked about what he likes about me, as well as my weaknesses on the field.

“Zizou always tells you the truth and that sincerity is much appreciated, among both players and fans.

“His return has renewed our hope and enthusiasm, it is practically like winning a title and we’re very happy with him.”

Madrid’s nightmare of a season practically ended after Ajax eliminated them from the Champions League in early March. Odriozola has undergone a steep learning curve and is excited to learn a lot from his time at the club.

“It has been a rollercoaster for me. The important thing is to undertake self-criticism and get an apprenticeship,” Odriozola added.

“You learn a lot at this club. One season in Madrid is like three seasons anywhere else, there is so much happening.”

Martin Odegaard

Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard admitted that he was surprised to see Zinedine Zidane re-join the club, but he has welcomed the return of the Frenchman.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Eredivisie club Vitesse and is happy to see the former player return to the Bernabeu.

The Norwegian believes that Zidane is the perfect coach for Madrid.

“I didn’t think Zidane was going to return so soon, but I think he’s a perfect coach for Real Madrid,” he told AS.

“He can make a good group again and create something very good. I think it’s very positive.”

Odegaard also expressed his opinion on what the Frenchman’s return to the club could mean to his own future. Although he does not want to speculate, he’s positive that the good relationship he enjoys with the coach can help his chances of a return to Madrid, coupled with some playing time.

“I get on very well with Zidane, but I don’t know what they’ll decide about my future,” Odegaard added. “I think it could be positive for me because he knows me and can have an idea of what I can give to the team. I know him well and we have a good relationship.

“The truth is there are a lot of possibilities for my future and we’ll have to talk at the end of the season. As I say, I’ve not talked to Madrid yet and I don’t know what they’ll think about me. There will be time to talk in a few months when the season ends.

“I think it’s really important for my development to have a lot of minutes and I know that’s very difficult at Madrid. I’m sure we’ll talk at the end of the season and find a solution together that’s good for everyone.”
