Zinedine Zidane has called La Liga the “most important title” for Real Madrid to target next season while taking a jab at champions-elect Barcelona.

Madrid’s rivals are set to win the league for the eighth time in the last 11 years, a spell during which Los Blancos have been champions only twice, and watched their other big rivals Atletico Madrid also lift the trophy once.

European success has long been the obsession at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the historic three straight Champions League titles that Zidane won during his first spell in charge of the club taking Madrid’s tally in the competition to 13, six more than second-place AC Milan and eight more than Barca, who have five.

The Blaugrana can seal their 26th league title this weekend, but Madrid still hold the record with 33, a point that Zidane emphasised.

“La Liga is very important. It’s the daily objective,” Goal quoted the Madrid manager as saying. “It’s going to be our first objective for the next season.

“We have 33 Liga titles. How many do Barcelona have? It’s true they are doing great in the last few years, and we have to recognise them, but in our history there are many more titles. For me it’s the most important title to fight for.”
