  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan says his transfer to Arsenal is a dream move as he was unveiled at his new club on Monday after making the switch from Manchester United.

“I’m very happy that we could finish this deal and I’m very happy to be here,” the Armenian said. “It’s a dream come true because I’ve always dreamed of playing for Arsenal. Now that I’m here, I’ll do my best for this club to create history.”

Back in 2009, in an interview with UEFA, Mkhitaryan had said he wanted to play for Arsenal, and in 2016 the move nearly happened, only for United to gazump the Gunners to sign the playmaker from Borussia Dortmund. But Mkhitaryan still professes the same love for his new club that was evident nine years ago.

“I always loved the way that Arsenal played and the way that Arsène Wenger has managed the team. There have been a lot of young players, he’s managed them and they’ve done very well. Of course I was in love with the game of Thierry Henry. I loved the way he played – and maybe that was the reason to support Arsenal.

    “He was like a hero.”

Mkhitaryan, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Sunday, has often been used either in the No. 10 role or in one of the wide positions in a front three, and says he doesn’t have a preferred position, adding he can play “all over the pitch”.

“It doesn’t matter exactly where. I don’t stay in one position, I always try to move to create space to [support] my team-mates. I’m everywhere!”
