  • Bayern Munich have secured the long-term future of full-back Joshua Kimmich after he signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract at the Allianz Arena.

The Germany international, who has played 37 matches for club and country this season, still had two years left on his existing deal but has dispelled any reported rumours of a reunion with former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the summer by extending his stay at the club.

Kimmich told fcbayern.com: “I’m very happy I’ve extended my contract so early. It shows the club and the officials have a lot of trust in me and see me as an important factor for FC Bayern’s long-term sporting success. It makes me proud.

“I’m grateful that I’ve always been able to develop at the highest possible level. My goals and the club’s goals for the coming years are very ambitious, and I want to play my part and do everything to achieve them with the team.”

The 23-year-old joined the Bundesliga runaway leaders from RL Leipzig in 2015 as a versatile player, predominantly playing in central midfield or in the forward line.

But since the retirement of Philipp Lahm at the end of last season, Kimmich has been a mainstay in the Bayern team at right-back and has also excelled in the position for the national team.
