  • Halfway through January, the winter transfer window has remained unusually quiet, with there being more speculation than action at this point over various proposed moves.

The rumour mill remains in overdrive, however, with news of potential deals flying thick and fast.

We’re running the rule over four of the latest transfer rumours doing the rounds, with our analysis and predictions below.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – TOTTENHAM TO BARCELONA

Barcelona are among a host of clubs interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to AS.

Why it will happen: The Dane has always harboured ambitions to play for Barca and was heavily linked to the club prior to his move to Spurs. The Catalans were well-stocked in midfield then but desperately need reinforcements now. With his quality and experience, he fits the bill.

Why it won’t happen: Manchester City, Chelsea and Barcelona – the rumour that was scrutinised in this column yesterday – are also reportedly interested in Eriksen. Maurizio Sarri in particular may push for his signing after Cesc Fabregas’ departure and Eriksen may be inclined to remain in London. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will demand a hefty fee as well which might put off buyers.

Verdict: His contract with Spurs runs out in 2020 so now would be the time to cash in on the 26-year-old and Barca seems to be the right fit, especially with the Catalans looking to offload Philippe Coutinho. A January deal may come to soon but if Mauricio Pochettino leaves Tottenham at the end of the season, a summer move would be very likely.

ALVARO MORATA – CHELSEA TO ATLETICO MADRID

Alvaro Morata’s challenging stint in the Premier League with Chelsea is set to come to an end as he closes in on a move to Atletico Madrid, Sky Sports report.

Why it will happen: Morata has not earned the favour of Sarri at Chelsea and needs regular playing time to restart his career. He would be keen to return to home to Madrid and the Blues are desperate to offload him.

Why it won’t happen: Chelsea’s £45 million valuation of him may put off a club like Atletico. The Premier League outfit are close to completing the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from AC Milan but should that deal fall apart, they may decide to hold on to Morata.

Verdict: Unless something goes drastically wrong, it seems as if this move would suit all parties as long as Chelsea are flexible with the price.

CARLOS VELA – LOS ANGELES FC TO BARCELONA

According to Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Carlos Vela is on Barcelona’s radar after they lost Munir El Haddadi to Sevilla.

Why it will happen: Barcelona need cover for Luis Suarez who is the only recognised centre forward in the senior team. Meanwhile, Vela could be tempted by the prospect of playing for a major European outfit again and perhaps even pick up some silverware.

Why it won’t happen: The Blaugrana may look to rope in a striker with a longer shelf life or even take the decision to promote from within given the recent criticism of their lack of La Masia products.

Verdict: Given his experience in La Liga with Real Sociedad, Vela should have no problem settling in. A stint at Barcelona right now could easily result in a La Liga winner’s medal and at 29, that will be enticing for the Mexican.

MICHY BATSHUAYI – CHELSEA TO EVERTON

Everton have made a swoop for Michy Batshuayi who has been leaning towards a loan move from Chelsea to Monaco, The Telegraph report.

Why it will happen: Given that Everton already have Kurt Zouma on loan, they would have to either buy the defender or Batshuayi and Chelsea would favour a scenario in which they recoup money spent on them.

Why it won’t happen: The striker appears to have his heart set on Monaco where he would reunite with Thierry Henry, who was part of the coaching staff for the Belgium national team.

Verdict: Batshuayi is certain to move somewhere and Chelsea’s asking price may deter Everton. A move to Monaco instead seems ready as soon as the Stamford Bridge outfit give it the green light.
