  • Highly-rated centre-back Matthijs de Ligt is open to the possibility of a move to Liverpool this summer.

The Ajax defender is one of the most sought after players in Europe with Barcelona in particular expressing a keen interest in adding him to their roster after securing the services of his club and country team-mate Frenkie de Jong ahead of next season.

However, the prospect of joining compatriot Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool is an appealing one, De Ligt has revealed.

“Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues,” he told Goal.com. “Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.

Van Dijk has been one of the standout centre-backs in Europe over the last 18 months and Jurgen Klopp may view De Ligt as the ideal partner for him. However, the 19-year-old insists he’s focused on his current club.

“It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up.”

Barcelona remain favourites to land De Ligt’s signature while Bayern Munich are said to be lining up a bid as well but Liverpool will certainly be encouraged by the young centre-back’s quotes.
