  • Wanted man: Gyan.

Asamoah Gyan’s free-scoring spell at Al Ain could be about to end after Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG tabled a sizeable offer for him, according to ESPN.

Gyan, 29, has proven an outstanding signing since he joined the Boss – initially on loan – from Premier League outfit Sunderland in 2011. He was the Arabian Gulf League’s top scorer in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14, helping his club to five trophies along the way – including last season’s Arabian Gulf League crown.

These performances have not gone unnoticed with Sven-Goran Eriksson’s CSL challengers looking to bring him in to provide the impetus to move up from second place.

SIPG will hope they can tempt the Boss into the sale of an elite player who suffered lingering injury problems last term, starting just 13 top-flight matches with 17 goals his lowest return since joining the club. Al Ain officials were unavailable for comment on the report.

Gyan, who has signed a contract extension last summer until 2018, has regularly expressed his contentment at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium. Talking in April about the decision to swap life in England for the Garden City, he said: “Career-wise, it has been great.

“There were a lot of criticisms when I left England. At international and club level, it has been tremendous for me. It has been the best move I have ever made in my career.”

The Ghana skipper is currently on a break in his native country, being scheduled to return to the UAE early next month for pre-season training. SIPG will hope the huge sums being spent on footballers in China can change these plans.

The CSL was the second-highest-spending division in the world behind only the English top flight in the 2015 winter transfer window. They have continued this trend in the summer, Shanghai Shenhua agreeing a €14 million (Dh57.4m) move for striker Demba Ba while rivals Guangzhou Evergrande have secured Brazil midfielder Paulinho for £9.8m (Dh 56.7m) from Premier League side Tottenham.

Meanwhile, reports in Brazil have stated Al Ain have made a bid for Vasco Da Gama midfielder Felipe Bastos. The 25-year-old has been on loan at Gremio, but Gazeta do Sul now expects him to move permanently to the Boss to fill one spot in their four-player foreign quota.
