A historic 13 member associations have stepped forward already, spanning five confederations, to put on the tournament for a sport which represents a modified version of football played on a smaller pitch with five players per side.

Formal declarations are needed by May 6 to proceed. If the Emirates successfully continue their pursuit, it would add to the large portfolio of footballing events the country has held in the last decade.

These include victory on home soil at the 2007 Gulf Cup, the 2009 and 2010 FIFA Club World Cups plus the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The country is also to put on the 2017 and 2018 Club World Cups, as well as the 2019 Asian Cup.

They are currently joined in the battle for the 2020 competition by Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand and United States. The only continent not to have a nation in the running is South America, who will be seeing the competition arrive on their soil at Colombia 2016 – which kicks off in September.

Having expressed their intent, the member associations can now expect to receive bid packs which include further information regarding the bidding process and the requirements to host the event. The next step is to solidify their commitment next month, with formal declarations of interest.
