  • State-of-the-art facilities at Dubai Sports City.

Dubai Sports City is launching a new five-a-side football tournament on 13 May which will see matches taking place every Wednesday evening at the Sports Village.

The tournament will build upon the ongoing success of the DSC Etihad Monday Night 7s, an event that is now in its ninth edition.

Explaining the idea behind the new tournament, Dubai Sports City Football Academy Manager, Inaki Beni said: “Our seven-a-side event on Monday nights has proved to be such a success we wanted to offer another tournament for players but in a slightly different format.

“Five-a-side is hugely popular and it also opens the way for teams that might not have enough players to make up a seven-a-side line-up.

“We have world-class facilities that have been enjoyed by English Premier League sides such as West Ham United, Swansea City and Newcastle United and it is great to be able to have those facilities available to the public too.

“And with floodlit grass and artificial outdoor pitches, as well as our FIFA-approved indoor surface in the Indoor Dome that allows action in air-conditioned comfort, we have the ability to stage football day and night on 365 days per year, whatever the weather.

“We are all looking forward to teams getting involved in this new tournament and for it to become as much a part of the landscape at the Dubai Sports City Sports Village as the DSC Etihad Monday Night 7s.”

Matches in the new tournament will take place within sight of the office of former Real Madrid and Spain legend Michel Salgado, now the Director of Spanish Soccer Schools (SSS), the Dubai Sports City coaching programme for five to 16 year-olds that already has well over 1000 children enrolled in just its second year of operation.

Reflecting on the new five-a-side football tournament, Dubai Sports City General Manager – Sports Business Maqbul Dudhia added: “This new action is yet another illustration of the growth and the versatility of Dubai Sports City and our facilities.

“We have responded to a need for this format and the fact we can do so at this time of the year, when the weather is heating up, is testament to our extensive floodlit artificial and grass pitches as well as our ability to switch matches indoors in our state-of-the-art Indoor Dome.

“It is a great chance for people to come and enjoy our world-class facilities and keep fit at the same time.

“We believe this new tournament will go from strength to strength – just like Dubai Sports City.”

Entries are still available and can be made via the DSC Football Academy by calling +971 4 448 1555 or emailing Francisco Mateo Diaz at [email protected].
