Liverpool were defeated 4-2 by Roma at the Stadio Olimpico but secured a 7-6 win on aggregate to advance to the final of the Champions League.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the 9th minute before a James Milner own goal restored parity. Georginio Wijnaldum gave the visitors the lead again in the 25th minute.
Edin Dzeko’s strike and a late brace from Radja Nainggolan took Roma close but it was too little too late.
Here are our Liverpool player ratings:
STARTING XI
Loris Karius – 6: Had a few saves to make but poorly parried El Shaarawy’s shot into Dzeko’s path.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4: Had many nervy moments in the second half. Was lucky to get away with a hand ball.
Dejan Lovren – 6: A poor clearance that led to Roma’s first equaliser aside, he didn’t do too much wrong.
Virgil van Dijk – 6: Commanded the box as usual, making plenty of clearances but not as assured on the ball.
Andrew Robertson – 6: The left-back made a couple of telling defensive contributions and looked good going forward.
James Milner – 6: Busy in midfield and covered a lot of ground. Knew nothing about an unfortunate own goal.
Jordan Henderson – 6: Shielded the defence well and put out a few fires, but his passing on the night was wayward.
Georginio Wijnaldum – 6: Had the freedom to drive forward and get involved in attack. Was alert to score from Dzeko’s error.
Mohamed Salah – 5: Subdued performance in contrast to the first leg. Threatening only in glimpses and often selfish.
Roberto Firmino – 6: Assisted that crucial first goal and attempted to play team-mates in but largely kept quiet.
Sadio Mane – 7: Took his goal well had a few shots. Dribbled well and was the pick of the forwards.
SUBSTITUTES:
Ragnar Klavan – N/A: Replaced Mane in the 83rd minute as Klopp looked to see out the game and gave away a penalty at the death.
Dominic Solanke – N/A: Came on for the final few minutes in place of Firmino.
Nathaniel Clyne – N/A: Replaced Alexander-Arnold in stoppage time.
