  • Firing form: Campbell scoring for Costa Rica against Uruguay.

Costa Rica’s star striker Joel Campbell has confidently claimed he is set to return to Arsenal next season.

The 21-year-old joined the Gunners in August 2011 but was only got granted a work permit in July 2013, meaning he is yet to play for the first team.

Campbell enjoyed loan spells at FC Lorient and Real Betis, before heading to Olympiakos last season.

It is at Olympiakos that Campbell really made an impression, playing a huge part in helping the Athens club's title-winning campaign with nine assists and eight goals in the Greek Super League.

Campbell introduced himself to Arsenal fans with an outstanding display in the club’s Champions League first leg win over Man United.

When questioned on his return to north London, Campbell replied: “Of course I have to go back because I have a contract with Arsenal. But the most important thing just now is my country and the World Cup.”

Campbell put in a man of the match display yesterday as he helped Costa Rica to a famous win over Uruguay, scoring his nation’s equaliser and posing a constant threat to the Uruguay back-line.

“Today was excellent for me but it would have come to naught without the contribution of my colleagues,” the youngster added. “Everyone lived up to their responsibilities. I tried to do my best to score goals and my colleague supported me.

“We have to take one step after another. We have difficult matches ahead but this will give us impetus.”

If Campbell continues this excellent form throughout the World Cup, he will be wanted by many of the top clubs if Arsene Wenger can’t guarantee him first team football next season.
