  • Frustrated: Wayne Rooney scored his first World Cup goal but could not help England secure a result against Uruguay.

Wayne Rooney has apologised to the England fans following their humiliating exit from the World Cup.

Rooney admitted he was "absolutely devastated" by the team's failure in Brazil as they were eliminated after only two matches.

Having lost 2-1 to both taly and Uruguay, England's exit was then confirmed on Friday as Costa Rica secured a surprise 1-0 win over Cesar Prandelli's Italy.

England will now play a dead rubber against Costa Rica as they look to salvage some pride.

"Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup," Rooney wrote on his official Facebook page. "Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out.

"Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better…gutted!"

Rooney was just about the only England player to come out with any credit from the Uruguay match, scoring his first World Cup finals goal only for Luis Suarez's late winner to sink Roy Hodgson's men.
