  • Get ready to hit the shore as the UAE’s largest open water event launches with the first of four events this season.

City Swim, which is approved by the UAE Swimming Federation, will hold its inaugural race at Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort in Dubai on Saturday, October 8.

Over 200 swimmers are expected to take part in the event, which originates from the canals in Amsterdam and New York’s Hudson River.

After the first race in Dubai, the event will move across the Emirates to the Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa in November, Abu Dhabi’s Le Meridien in January and the Ajman Saray in March, with even more locations expected to be added for the 2017 season.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an aspiring Michael Phelps or a fish out of water, City Swim is perfect for swimmers of all abilities and ages.

“City Swim UAE is the perfect event for experienced swimmers as well as those that are new to the sport,” said a spokesperson for the event.

“Our aim is to provide a safe and fun environment for all swimming abilities and partnering with some of the best resorts in the UAE means we have the perfect platform to offer something unique for everyone whether you are taking part or supporting your friends and family.”

Four distances are on offer as participants can tackle the 250m, 500m, 1000m or 2500m individually or in teams of three to five members. The 250m and 500m distances are open to ages five and above, while the 1000m is available to anyone aged 13 and older. Adults aged 16 and above can take part in the 2500m.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers, as well as to the top three competitors in each age and gender category. For teams, rankings will be based on the cumulative time of the three fastest swimmers in each group.

Registration, which closes on Saturday, October 1, costs Dh185 for all swimmers, with a 10 per cent discount offered to those who sign up for all four events.

You can also contribute to the charity Road to Awareness for children in need, so there’s no reason not to take part in what is sure to be a popular community event.
