As part of their drive in promoting the game, IFA have launched their first-ever girls’ football academy and although the term is under way, it’s not too late to join.
Since opening in 2004, IFA has become one of the top footballing schools in the UAE with more than 2,000 attending coaching sessions or competing in leagues across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Having seen those go from strength to strength, they have now expanded to attract female footballers in Dubai.
Open to ages six and above, girls of all abilities are invited to join with sessions every week.
On Tuesdays, seven to 12-year-olds can attend classes at Emirates International School in Meadows between 18:00 and 19:00. And on Sundays, the Emirates English Speaking School, Jumeirah is the venue for those aged between four to 12-year-old (17:00 – 18:00), while players aged between 13-17 will take to the field from 18:15 to 19:15.
Overseen by experienced coaches, players will not only learn the basic skills but enhance their game by learning the importance of conditioning, as well as testing themselves in matches.
“We’re very excited about launching our first girls’ only sessions in Dubai,” said IFA’s technical director Tommy Wingrove.
“It will be a great opportunity for young women to take their first steps in the game. By offering them a fun but safe environment as well as a number of great pathways, girls can develop and improve in their own time.”

He added: “We are delighted to confirm that IFA will be working together with Sports Academy USA to provide talented players with a student-athlete pathway, offering exclusive US college scholarship opportunities to pursue their studies and football development to the highest level.
“Players are guided through the often complex recruitment and application process, assessed and monitored on the field and exposed to exclusive showcase events both locally and in the USA.”
Once the player turns 18, the girls’ programme does not end there. With the signing of Dubai-based Phoenix ladies team, as well as the newly formed IFA Eagles, players can look forward to developing their game even further.
“We have found that the interest in girls football is growing rapidly and by adding the adult women’s teams, girls now have a real opportunity to progress within the UAE too,” said Wingrove.
Among those who play the game in the UAE is Jessica Prelle, captain of IFA Pheonix Ladies.
“Myself and the team are delighted to join up with IFA and support their effort in girls’ football,” she said. “These programmes are a welcome development for sportswomen in the region and it is important to approach the girls from a young age. We are still fighting stereotyping in football, especially in the Middle East and it is time to break down these barriers. By having adult women actively involved in the programme we can provide a unique environment where girls feel comfortable and receive the care and attention they need.”
