Reach new heights: Push your limits and achieve new goals at Wadi.

With the Wadi Adventure Race (WAR) more than a month away, athletes can begin their preparations for the grueling event with a free fitness training camp.

The 12th edition returns on Saturday, January 14 at Wadi Adventure in Al Ain and those who have competed in previous years will know what to expect from the gruelling event.

Competitors will be pushed to their limits as they tackle a series of obstacles on land and in water at the Middle East’s first man-made whitewater rafting, kayaking and surfing facility.

To ensure athletes are ready for the opening race of 2017, the venue management have arranged four training sessions every Saturday morning at 08:00 from December 17 to January 7.

Since launching in 2012, WAR has gone from strength to strength, attracting hundreds of competitors in each race.

And given there’s the extra advantage of the training camps for athletes to step up their preparations, Nilesh Mistry, general manager of Wadi Adventure in Al Ain, insists it’s an opportunity not to be missed.

“We’re inviting people to be here at Wadi Adventure in Al Ain and witness the biggest and the best of all obstacles races in the UAE,” he said.

“The Wadi Adventure Race is a great opportunity for the fitness community to come together for a day of excitement, fun and a test of true athletic ability, and the free training sessions are the best way to train your body for the great event ahead.

Several obstacles will need to be tackled in the water for the Wadi Adventure Race.

“For those who attend the training sessions, they will be working on a lot of things.

“It will consist of a number of activities including runs, pull-ups, push-ups, mile runs, burpees, squat jump and sit-jumps.

“Also on each of the four weeks, we will have a new trainer overseeing the sessions each week.”

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, there’s different categories to choose from with 5, 10 and 15km distances on the agenda.

Even if you’re not planning on lining up for the race, you’re still welcome to make the most of the training classes.

“Yes, absolutely. The free training sessions are open for everyone, irrespective if they would like to go ahead with taking part in WAR 12 or not,” said Mistry.

After the tough one-and-a-half hour work-out, you can treat yourself to a healthy breakfast, which must be booked in advance.

Give it a try: ISIA certified coaches will teach kids how to enjoy skating.

Children will be spoilt for options during the Christmas break at Zayed Sports City as the popular Abu Dhabi venue prepares to host three camps this month. The Kids Holiday and Ice Skating programmes return for another edition, while the Tennis Academy camp is a new addition to a packed schedule.

Running from December 18 to 22 and January 2 to 5, there’s still time to register and see why it’s highly rated in the capital.

From 08:30 to 17:30, children (aged 5-12) can look forward to a fun-filled day of activities including ice-skating, bowling, tennis, football and arts and crafts at the Kids Holiday Camp.

For youngsters who want to try out ice-skating, they can do so under the guidance of certified Ice Skating Institute of Asia coaches who will be overseeing the sessions (from 09:00 to 13:00) and giving an insight into their successful Learn to Skate programme.

Tennis enthusiasts between the age of 7 and 18 can develop their game at the tennis camp. From 09:00 to 13:00, highly-qualified coaches will teach the nuances of the game while also taking testing them on court in matches, all of which are delivered at a world-class facility.

On top of that, there will also be a chance to meet some Davis Cup players, who will be practicing on court later this month.

Just perfect: The camps provide a fun and safe environment for kids.

ZSC have a rich history of hosting successful camps and this month’s will be no different.

“Both the ZSC Kids Holiday and ZSC Academy Ice Skating camps have been incredibly popular in the past,” said ZSC’s general manager Barry Bremner. “We’ve been running these for several years, and we receive lots of new referrals and returning campers. This is a great indicator about the quality of the service that we provide.”

He added: “With the launch of ZSC Academy earlier this year, we are now providing high-quality tennis coaching directly to clients. The camp is an extension of this. It’s designed for players with experience, at an intermediate or advanced level, and it aims to make them better in high-performance situations.”

Prices vary according to the camp with one and two-week options available. Bremner insists the camps tick all the boxes that parents are looking for.

“Parents love our camps for many reasons – the top one being because the kids love them,” he said. “They offer a way for children to stay active, which is an important part of their overall health, and make sure they are having fun at the same time. With three camps on offer, and great value with each, there is something that fits every family.”

Since the sport was established in China, it has become hugely popular around the world and the UAE is no different, catching the dragon fever with a number of teams in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khamaih.

Admar Barbarians are among the UAE sides, based in Abu Dhabi and are on the search to add to their competitive squad.

“Admar Barbarians started as a corporate team representing Logistics International LLC in Abu Dhabi, UAE. But last year, it became a non-corporate team representing professionals of different backgrounds, who came together as dragon boat enthusiasts,” said co-captain Lem Fernandez.

“We’re on the look out for anyone who is physically fit and can do strenuous exercises. More than the physical capabilities, we look for persistent, persevering, committed and gutsy individuals as dragon boating is geared more on the mental than the physical side.”

Newcomers can attend two free trials on Monday or Tuesdays (18:00) or Friday or Saturdays (05:30) at Shangri-La beach, Qaryat Al Beri in Abu Dhabi, before deciding whether they want to sign up for the full year at Dh1,500.

The fee includes membership, the chance to race five to six races as well as covering training costs.

And Fernandez insists there’s plenty of positives by trying it out.

“Our paddlers started with zero knowledge of the sport however by determination, discipline and will, they are now the strong and skilled athletes that they are,” she said.

“At Admar Barbarians, apart from having rigorous training sessions, the aims are to produce paddlers with characters. This is what our paddlers are taught, that they not only paddle for fun or glory, but to develop moral and ethical qualities as they grow with the team.”

She added: “Those who thrive on accomplishment should join as results of their hard work in training are seen during races. Those keen for camaraderie should join, as it is a great place to meet new people and make friends. Those wanting to improve their lifestyle and fitness should join, as the training demands will enable them to have better physique.”
