  • In it together: There is a genuine kinship among triathletes.

With 2017 now upon us, there’s no better way to begin the new year on an active note with the 2XU Triathlon

Championship returning for their second race of the season.

This Friday, hundreds will flock to Mamzar for the popular multi-sport discipline from 07:00 and you can still join them ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Whether you’re an experienced triathlete or someone who has never tried it before, there are various distances and age groups on offer.

Four categories are on the schedule with the Junior Super Sprint open for those under 13, who will swim 180m, cycle for 8km followed by a 1.25km run. Their Super Sprint distance, which consists of a 375m swim, 8km cycle and 2.5km run, is aimed for 13-18 year-old as well as adults who are new to the sport.

For those who want to test themselves, then the Sprint (750m swim, 24km cycle and 5km run) is there while the Olympic category will see athlete compete twice those distances. With triathlon booming in the UAE with many community events held throughout the year, it was no surprise to see more than 800 entries received for the opening race of the season, with a similar turn-out is expected this weekend.

“The second race of the 2XU Triathlon Championships is going to be an absolute thriller, especially with everyone in fine form ahead of Ironman 70.3 Dubai,” said 2XU marketing manager Samantha Cadwallader.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to practice your transitions and any last-minute race strategies, so we expect to see some stellar performances. Once again, we will be giving all athletes a technical training top valued at Dh180 which they can collect with their race pack from GO Sport in Mall of the Emirates.”

As part of their vision in attracting more people, there is a discount for families of three while there are attractive prizes to be won.

“An added incentive is that anyone who finishes the race will stand a chance of winning an all expenses paid trip to the Thanyapura Health and Sport Resort in Phuket, Thailand” said Beryl Kyte, marketing manager for Al Mana Fashion Group – Sports Division.

“We at GO Sport are delighted with the participation of athletes in the triathlon series and what is really promising is the number of juniors who have been entering these races and in doing so, many parents have got involved as well making it a real family affair.

“For that reason we have asked the organisers to offer all families of three or more a special discount on entry fees and in that way making it more viable for the whole family to come down and participate.”
