Trail runners can rejoice with the return of the Adventure HQ Night Rebel by Urban Ultra, set to challenge participants in the UAE’s natural surroundings.
Held on Friday, September 21 across Wadi Showka/Helo, the single stage trail run features three distances: 10km, 20km and 30km.
The concept is simple. Runners will have four-and-a-half hours to complete the 30km distance, which fully takes place at night.
While the course will be very dark, it will be marked with reflective marker tape, which will only be visible with a head torch – one of the items on the list of required gear needed to participate in the event.
As far as the terrain, prepare for gravel jeep track and rocky wadi bed with short sharp climbs and undulations. Runners can complete the course in either trail shoes or road shoes.
A hydration pack is required, but there will be water checkpoints located at the 5km turn for the 10km runners, at the 10km turn for the 20km runners and at the 15km turn for the 30km runners.
Because there are no hotels near the race, participants have the option to either drive up and back after the finish, or pitch a tent in one of the areas close by.
Along with a headlamp/torch and hydration pack, other mandatory gear includes a full-charged cell phone, a water pouch (supplied in the race pack), a whistle for emergency, a ziplock bag for trash, the course map and a first aid kit.
Items which are not required but are recommended include a waterproof bag for your phone, small scissors, energy gels/nutrition, a watch, blister care and a light jacket.
Runners can collect their race pack – which contains a race bib, water pouch and other goodies – from Adventure HQ at Times Square from September 18-21.
The registration fee is Dh288.75 for each of the three distances on offer and includes a t-shirt, bandana goody bag, medal and refreshments. Make sure to sign up before the deadline of midnight on September 13.
Join the local trail running community and experience a unique kind of race with the Night Rebel.

Dubai’s leading basketball academy Prestige Star Sport Academy (PSSA) is giving people of all ages the chance to stay active and escape the summer heat this month by offering free basketball courts every Thursday until the end of August.
Passionate players can gather their friends for some healthy competition and take advantage of the PSSA court at Dubai Sports World free of charge, as well as have the opportunity to brush up their technical skills with a PSSA coach who will be on site every Thursday.
“With temperatures souring throughout August in the UAE, we know that people struggle with fatigue and find it hard to stay active during the summer months,” said founder of PSSA, Dejan Kamenjasevic.
“We wanted to give people an incentive to gather their friends and have some fun playing basketball at the PSSA court at Dubai Sports World.
“We’re also offering a coach as part of the deal so it is the perfect time for people to brush up on their basketball skill and take part in some friendly competitions.”
Operating in over 30 locations throughout the UAE, PSSA offers high level coaching services and specialises in nurturing sporting talent.
Based in Dubai, PSSA was formed in April 2017 with the mission to harness the love and passion for basketball in the UAE to empower an all-inclusive concept of a unified and cohesive UAE society, rather than just UAE nationals ultimately driving and shaping the sport’s development in the country and beyond.
PSSA is a unique association of dedicated FIBA certified coaches and ex-professional players, business specialists, and recreational enthusiasts, alongside aspiring professionals across the age, ethnic and economic spectrums.
At PSSA, business affects positive social changes, dreams are born and encouraged, talents are discovered and ambitions are realised.
This is where sport breaks down barriers, brings people together and betters the lives of communities – through the love and passion for basketball.

The new term in September might seem a long way off but parents can now start enrolling their children for Dubai’s The Butch Harmon School of Golf new development programme.
Their nine-week junior initiative is back for a new term from September 30, giving an opportunity for aspiring golfers between 3 and 15, to learn the basics and enhance their game at Dubai Sports City.
The course is open to all abilities with each player developing their skills in a fun, creative and enjoyable environment under the guidance of a highly-skilled coaching team.
Since it was launched, the programme has gone from strength to strength and delivered positive results.
“Throughout the years the junior programme introduced a huge number of juniors to golf, but also helped a significant number of them climb the ladder and play at the highest level of amateur golf and even compete and win on professional tours as well,” said Jamie McConnell, Senior Professional, Butch Harmon School of Golf.
“Among the many high achievers we have had juniors win amateur tournaments around the world, play for their respective international teams and compete in a number of European tour events both in the UAE and overseas.”
The fees for each course has been revised for the new term with the beginners level for 5-15 years costing Dh1,100 per term, while kids aged 3 and 4, can learn for Dh870 per term.
“Our philosophy is very much based around teaching the kids not only the fundamentals of golf, but also getting them to move in the correct way and utilise other sporting techniques to help them develop their skill and power,” added McConnell.
“This is known as Long Term Athletic Development and to be more specific helps them learn certain skills at certain times, whereby their physiological age will dictate when is best to develop these skills. It can also significantly increase their excitement and enjoyment when it comes to golf.”
Although there are six weeks until the new term gets underway, McConnell insists there’s plenty of reasons why people should join.
“The first is it simply introduces them to the game in a fun and friendly environment. From there we can take each child on their own journey through the many experiences that they will have as part of this wonderful sport.
“As the years pass by they will begin to decide whether they want to take the game more serious and play competitively, or if they wish to make it a more casual pass time. Regardless of what they choose our programme can cater for a clear pathway to both, and our coaches will be there to look after them throughout.”
