  • Glide on ice: The skating programme at Zayed Sports City provides an opportunity to learn a new skill.

If adults ever wanted to learn to skate, then Zayed Sports City are holding their new programme with classes beginning on Saturday.

Zayed Sports City are no strangers to holding ice skating classes; they’ve been running them for over 10 years. Each month attracts over 250 students and the programme has gone from strength to strength.

With the original aim of attracting children, Zayed Sports City found there was a growing interest and decided to hold a separate programme for adults.

The programme consists of a ‘term’ which is four lessons in a row, at Dh280. Lessons last 30 minutes and take place once a week on Saturdays. If after the four lessons, skaters feel they need more lessons, they can enrol again until they’re satisfied with reaching their potential.

“Skaters come with their own personal reason to join and they are certainly varied,” said Barry Bremner, general manager of Zayed Sports City. “Some are parents who want to be comfortable taking their children on the ice.

“Others view this as their physical activity, a fun and unique alternative to the gym and still others are enrolling for the social aspect or to learn a new skill. Our goal for the programme is to provide a means to reach their goals in an environment where they feel comfortable and motivated.

“Our skating programmes are growing and the adult Learn to Skate is now a complement to the youth programme as well as Abu Dhabi Figure Skating Team. We have great events throughout the year including an international figure skating competition and theout ice show, which had a record 64 performers in December.”

The programmes are taught by coaches Zsolt Kerekes and Andreea Tuliga, who have between them 15 years of coaching experience. And Bremner is encouraging more people to take up ice skating.

Healthy endeavour: Ice skating is a fun and unique alternative to the gym.

He said: “Joining the programme is absolutely worth a try. We provide a safe environment with experienced and certified coaches. Our curriculum is tried and tested on thousands of students and we have high retention within the programme proving it is worthwhile. It’s fun, active and unique and we firmly believe that we provide the best quality programme of its type in the region.”
