  • Tiger Woods leads an all-star cast of golfing talent into this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, and going hand-in-hand with the action on the course, are the activities off it.

The Championship Village is open for the duration of the tournament, which finishes on Sunday, and offers visitors of all ages a fantastic range of attractions, prizes, games, competitions, live performances and family-orientated fun.

Fans will be able to enjoy the popular HSBC Interactive Zone, where the public can test and hone their swing and putting techniques, and non-golfers can spend time in the creative area, learning the fundamentals of the game.

Elsewhere, the Children’s Zone encourages kids to try golf first-hand or take part in arts and crafts activities in the Children’s Creative Zone.

For the big kids – and that inner child among the adults –  a range of interactive sports and games challenges are on offer, from a Golf Simulator and Putting Challenge to Coaching Nets, where visitors can work on their game courtesy of a free golf lesson from a professional coach.

That enough? No, actually, as a Speed Serve Challenge and Cricket Challenge will test agility, stamina and speed, while the Rugby Kicking Challenge and Rugby Lineout Challenge tests strength and precision.

“The 2012 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship offers something for everyone, from top-class action on the course to world-class entertainment in the Championship Village,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Manager for Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.

“For 2012, the Championship Village is bigger and better than ever and we have made sure that all members of the family will find something special to do.

“We believe we have created an unmatched experience for everyone at the Championship,” he added.

Visitors on Saturday are encouraged to get involved in the action by wearing red. Your reward if you do? Free entry to the course.

‘Dress in Red Day’ encourages visitors to don clothing in all shades of red and all manner of styles, from a simple red accessory, such as a cap or brooch, to a bold head-to-toe ensemble for the sartorially brave.

“The Best Dressed Lady will win a prize for her wardrobe efforts and with a DJ hitting the Championship Village decks following the day’s play, ladies cannot afford to forget their dancing shoes.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to really get into the spirit of the Championship,” said Al Sheikh.

“We are encouraging everyone looking for a great day out to pop on something red and come visit the Championship on Saturday.

    “It’s a new fun addition to the tournament’s wide-ranging, family-friendly entertainment programme.”

With action taking place off the course, and a sea of red set to
descend on the Abu Dhabi Course on Saturday, get your autograph book out as the field reads like a who’s who of the world’s top golfers.

In addition to current world No1 Luke Donald, thousands of spectators will also witness three reigning Major champions, Rory McIlroy, (US Open), Darren Clarke (British Open) and Charl Schwartzel (US Masters), Abu Dhabi debutant Woods, and former World No1 Lee Westwood, attempt to wrestle the Falcon trophy from the vice-like clutches of three-time Abu Dhabi winner and defending champion, Martin Kaymer.

Other headline contenders include rising Australian star, Jason Day, and Korea’s top ranked player, KJ Choi.
