  • Eight tips to make sure UAE residents enjoy their golf this summer.

Golf in the UAE in the summer months makes a lot of economic sense given the number of tempting offers on green fees from the golf clubs.

However, you have got to be extra careful playing in extreme heat, otherwise the doctor’s bill is sure to consume all the dirhams saved.

Here are some tips that will help you enjoy some of the finest golf courses in the UAE over the next couple of months…

    STAY HYDRATED

That’s commonsense and the most basic tip. Make sure you drink plenty of cold water, but stay away from too much ice. Sports and isotonic drinks are helpful, but they should not be used as replacement for water.

Also remember, the hydration process needs to start way before you play the round, so start increasing your water consumption nearly 18-24 hours before. And one more thing, cut down on tea/caffeine and carbonated drinks before and during the round.

    CHOOSE YOUR TEE TIME

Either try to be the early bird so that you can get away from the golf course before it starts getting unbearable around 11am, or book a time after 3pm and make the most of the extended daylight and the evening breeze that starts blowing on most UAE golf courses. It is best to avoid the 11am to 3pm time.

    BOOK THAT CART

We’d normally never advise that because the true fun of a round of golf is when it is played walking the course. But because you need to conserve your energy in every possible way, and be in the shade as often as possible, hiring a cart is a must.

    USE SUNSCREEN LOTION

We all know what the sun can do to your skin so protect yourself from getting burned and worse. It’s common sense.

    WEAR A CAP/VISOR

A visor is a better option because it gives you the necessary shade, and also does not trap the sweat and
heat as a cap can do.

    KEEP A TOWEL

If you can feel the heat, make sure you wet the towel and wrap it around your head and shoulders from time to time. The water will cool down your body temperature.

    WEAR CORRECT CLOTHING

The figure-hugging T-shirts can be kept for cooler times. During summer, it is best to wear slightly
loose-fitting cotton clothes that are light in colour. Dark colours absorb the heat more. There is
a debate about shorts and trousers, with many experts voting for the latter.

KEEP EXTRA GLOVES IN THE BAG

Because you are sure to make them wet with your sweat!
