  • Six-shot triumph: Rene Larsen (2nd right).

Rene Larsen ended the three-year long reign of John Fellingham as champion of Jaermann & Stübi Dubai Creek Seniors Open, when his consistent play over the two days of competition gave him a massive six-shot victory.

At Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the popular event was a great success with a field of over 60 senior players from across the region, and as far afield as the United Kingdom, turning up despite the hot and humid conditions.

After the opening round, it looked like Dubai Creek member Fellingham was all set to win for the fourth consecutive year when he moved to the top of the leaderboard with a round of two-over par 73.

Larsen, a scratch golfer, joined him for tied-first at the halfway stage, with David Gowans and Vikram close behind. With 18 holes of the challenging Creek course to be played and just four shots separating the top four players, there was everything to play for in the final round.

But Larsen was in a league of his own, slowly moving away from his rivals with a consistent display.

He had managed to take a two-shot lead by the time he made the turn, and then opened up the gap even more on the back nine.

Eventually, another superb round of 73 gave him a 36-hole total of 146, with Gowans finishing runner-up after adding another 76 for a 10-over par 152 total.

Fellingham failed to carry on his day one form and a final round of 81 saw him finish tied third along with Judge (77-77-154).

In the net division, it was Hyo Choong Kim who stormed to victory after a stunning final-round 63, bringing her two-day total to a very impressive 11-under par 131 net.

George Varghese was second and Aziz Al Hakim third after both finished with net 68s to finish with totals of 138 and 140 respectively.

After winning the trophy, Larsen said: “I would just like to start off by thanking my playing partners, it has been a great event, one I always look forward to coming back to and I am honoured to have won.

“I would also like to say a huge thank you to the sponsors Jaermann & Stübi for their support with this year’s event. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”
