  • Five-star effort: DP World Tour Championship.

The DP World Tour Championship, which is being played this week at the Earth course of Jumeirah Golf Estates, got off to a fantastic start with the news it has received an honour of the highest order from Dubai Sports Council.

At a glittering ceremony hosted at the Armani Hotel on Monday, the 2014 edition of the event was awarded a prestigious 5-star award, from DSC under the new Dubai Sports Events Ranking System.

The innovative system subjects local sporting events to a rigorous evaluation and ranking process to determine their score in a number of areas from a set criteria that has been laid down by a panel of judges.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World, title sponsors of the DP World Tour Championship, said: “For the DP World Tour Championship to be recognised in this way confirms the success of the tournament and our commitment to golf which we reconfirmed earlier this year with the renewal of our support.

“As a global company with a network of over 65 terminals worldwide enabling trade and logistics, we see the sport as an ideal fit. It has also put Dubai and the UAE firmly centre stage on the international sporting calendar.”

Yousuf Kazim, CEO Jumeirah Golf Estates, host venue of the tournament since the first year, said: “This is the seventh year that Jumeirah Golf Estates has hosted the DP World Tour Championship and we’re proud that the event has been recoginised by Dubai Sports Council, winning a five star award.

“The event draws in crowds of up to 65,000 visitors from around the world and it’s a great achievement to receive such a prestigious ranking.

“We have been working tirelessly over the past few months to deliver another successful event this coming weekend, whilst showcasing Jumeirah Golf Estates luxury community and award-winning golf courses to the world.”

Nick Tarratt, Director European Tour, International Dubai Office was delighted that the 2014 DP World Tour Championship scooped the highest ranking possible, saying: “It’s a huge honour to receive a 5-star ranking, one of only four events to achieve the highest award possible.

“We’re extremely proud of the year on year progress the tournament has made since the inaugural event in 2009 and this award is recognition for everybody involved in putting together and hosting what is regarded as one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting and social events on the calendar.”
