  • History was made in Ras Al Khaimah as Peres Jepchirchir broke the women’s world record by three seconds at the RAK Half Marathon Friday.

The Kenyan edged the time set by compatriot Florence Kiplagat in Barcelona two years ago by crossing the finish line in 1:05:06 at the 11th edition of the event.

Not only did Jepchirchir enter the record books, but she outduelled three-time RAK champion Mary Keitany, who hadn’t lost a half marathon since 2007.

The 35-year-old Keitany finished in second in 1:05:13, which was still good for a personal best and the fourth-fastest time ever.

For the men, Bedan Karoki couldn’t match his countrywoman’s feat, but had a fine showing of his own that resulted in a first-place finish 47 seconds off the world record pace.

The IAAF World Half Marathon Championship silver medallist admitted afterwards to having doubts over his fitness and when he vomited several times following his finish, it was easy to see why. But Karoki would not be denied as he beat runner-up Yigrem Demelash of Ethiopia and third-placed Augustine Choge of Kenya.

Here, we round up some of the best Instagram and Facebook posts from the event.

الحمد لله! As usual 😄 Great day at this year's RAK Half Marathon. Amazing to see this event (and the running scene in general) grow in popularity and to see more and more people getting into endurance sports. Well done to everyone who ran it, whatever their time was. Remember: It's a challenge against yourself. The new course and race village were great, the organization was impeccable in my opinion. Credit to the sponsors, organizers, government authorities and volunteers who made happen. Rami Turk and Nathan Clayton: Well done gents 👍🏻. The next part could be copied and pasted from several former races: Personally, my race was going according to plan up until the 15k mark. Was on course for a (marginal) PB, but I struggled with the heat from that 15k point onwards. My legs couldn't keep up with my lungs anymore. Finished in 1:44:41 (3 minutes off PB). I hope this post somehow encourages someone out there to try out running (or any sport or activity they feel like doing really). If you're in the UAE and would like to run a race, check out www.premieronline.com and sign up to their newsletters. For the record, I am not promoting the race or the website for any personal monetary gain. I like seeing initiatives and businesses that get people more active. Enough blabbering (assuming anyone has read this far). Again, well done to everyone who was part of the event and see you next year inshallah #RAKHalf :) #عمر_يركظ @rakmarathon
