  • It is important that you begin any outdoor exercise session in a well-hydrated state.

Summer is just around the corner but training still goes on. And as the temperature soars so should your hydration levels.

Before you make your way to TrainDubai this summer, keep in mind some key factors to make your exercise session more rewarding.

It is important that you begin any outdoor exercise session in a well-hydrated state for maximum performance and concentration.

    • Don’t wait till you are already thirsty to start drinking; you are already dehydrated if this is the case.

    • Ideally you should begin fluid intake when you first wake up in the morning.

    • If you are training in the evening your fluid intake should be 3-4 litres of water, consumed gradually throughout the day.

Use drinks that replace electrolytes as well as water.

A good rule of thumb is that for every 1kg of body weight lost you will need to replace this with 1.5L of fluid.

    DO
Use drinks that replace electrolytes as well as water. Water has been shown to be useful in preventing dehydration but sports drinks that replace essential electrolytes and essential salts are also as good. Good sports drinks provide carbohydrate fuel in addition to fluid replacement and therefore are more effective in maintaining performance.

    DON’T
Drink caffeine prior or during exercise. Although having a cup of coffee before your ride after a long day at the office may seem like a good idea to sharpen up, it actually has the opposite effect on your training. Caffeine increases your levels of dehydration as it acts like a diuretic increasing the loss of fluid in your body.
