  • Early mistakes: Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods had no explanation for his poor show after missing a second consecutive cut in the majors Saturday.

The former world No1 cracked jokes at the end of his round, but that could not hide the disappointment of struggling on a golf course which he has always said is his favourite in the whole world, and where he has previously won two Open titles.

After closing with a three-over par round of 75, which gave him a tournament tally of seven-over par 151, Woods headed back home after missing the cut by seven shots.

When asked what went wrong he said it was a series of unfortunate events very early in the tournament from which he never recovered.

He said: “I came in with high expectations. I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event. On the very first hole on the first day, I fat a sand wedge in the water.

“I fatted my 3-iron off the tee, and then I fatted my 8-iron into the green on second, and then drove it in a divot there on the fourth.

“It was just one thing after another. I had my opportunities, I just didn’t get the ball close enough, and then when I did, I didn’t make them.”

Woods said he didn’t learn anything from his two Open rounds, but would continue to work on the same things before playing his own tournament, the Quicken Loans National, in two weeks.

He added: “We were talking about it the other day; I hit the ball solid. It’s just that it wasn’t getting through the wind.

“I don’t know what was causing that, and it’s something that we’re going to have to take a look at, look at my numbers, see if the spin rates are on or not, but it was so frustrating because all my shots that I hit solid and flush into the wind, they just weren’t carrying at all.

“But I have to keep going forward.”
