Motorsport round-up: Al Forsan lines up karting GP, Dubai drivers scorch Losail

  • The Al Forsan Grand Prix takes place on February 27 and has drawn huge interest from fans around the UAE.

    Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) on Wednesday announced its sporting schedule for the early part of the New Year, revealing upcoming motorsport and shooting events to be hosted by Al Forsan International Sports Resort.

    In motorsport, ADSC’s Al Forsan Grand Prix will get under way on February 27. The three-round race will use four-stroke karts with four-lap practice and qualifying, followed by a second-lap pre-final and a 12-lap Grand Prix to determine the winners.

    Entry is open to anyone 16 years of age and above, with a fee of Dh400 per driver. Registrations close at 19:00 on the day of the competition. Total prize money up for grabs for each race is Dh16,000.

    ADSC’s Bull’s Eye Shooting Competition will take place daily from March 1 to April 30. Open to everyone 15 years and older, the event strives to bring together shooters from around the region for a competitive challenge. 

    “Spectators will be in for an exhilarating experience as they watch successful shooters and racers compete for some of the best prizes in the sport,"  said Rashed Al Qubaisi, general manager of Al Forsan International Sports Resort. 

    Dubai drivers scorch in Losail

    Dubai based drivers dominated the top six fastest times in first practice ahead of Round 4 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge this weekend at Losail International Circuit in Qatar.

    In first practice, Clemens Schmid of Al Nabooda Racing was just 0.190 seconds faster than Zaid Ashkanani. Skydive Dubai were also among the top six pacesetters in practice.

    Reigning champion Ashkanani (134 pts) trails Schmid (144) but holds a 16-point lead over the third placed Al Maktoum in the drivers’ standings.

    The region’s leading drivers will line-up for Race 1 under lights today (Thursday) with the Race 2 on Friday.
