  • Growing in confidence: Ed Jones has made great strides in Formula 3 over recent weeks.

Ed Jones aims to build on his Hockenheim success as he heads to the Pyrenean city of Pau in France for third round of the F3 European Championship, from May 9-11.

The Dubai-based 19-year-old endured a mixed weekend in the first round at Silverstone last month, finishing inside the points in two of the three races.

Coming into the Hockenheim round with 10 points under his belt, the British rookie managed to leave Germany last night seventh in the overall standings on 43 points and the youngster is now hoping to maintain the momentum going forward.

Jones told Sport360°: “At the moment this weekend couldn’t have really gontoe any better. We’ve made a lot of progress and now have confirmed that yesterday [Saturday when he finished Race 1 in second] wasn’t a one-off.

“We still have some work to do with our race pace, but we know where to work on for that. We’re not far from the win, and that is definitely the next aim for us this season.”

Obviously, the second podium was no walk in the park, as Jones explained: “I am very happy with this second podium result of the weekend, but I really had to work hard in this race.

“Especially in the second half of the race; Lucas Auer put me under a lot of pressure and he attacked me after the safety car phase.

“It was a nice battle in which every one left the other enough room. Of course, I am very happy that I came out on top.”

The 2013 European F3 Open champion was on course to securing a hat-trick of podium finishes, but with the unpredictable nature of motor racing and a slew of young talent in the mix, it was never going to be easy and Jones was grateful to the entire team for the double success he achieved over the weekend.

“First of all, I would like to thank the team again for giving me the opportunity to perform so well this weekend.

“The third race was quite a disappointment, I had some problems with the handling of the car and the pace wasn’t quite there.

“A drive through penalty destroyed any chance of points in the end. However, I am very pleased with how the rest of the weekend went and we will be working very hard to maintain the pace this coming next weekend at Pau.”

Jones can take comfort in the fact that it is still early days and, with nine rounds and 27 races to go, the championship is still wide open.
