Four years after she became the first player in history to decide a major championship match with a penalty shot, Ellen Hoog repeated the trick in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Making the moment even sweeter, the Dutch midfield ace’s effort came against neighbours and rivals Germany.
The 4-3 triumph – after the game had finished 1-1 in regulation – means the Netherlands are now in line for a third successive Olympic gold with Great Britain awaiting in Friday’s final.
Hoog struck the winning penalty against New Zealand at the same stage in London 2012.
“I felt that the team trusted me but after I scored it, I don’t know what was going on,” she said.
“The most feeling I think is relief. Just relief that we won.”
