  • Cruel blow: Des Walker.

The final had started poorly for Terry Venables’ men as a pumped up Paul Gascoigne scythed down Gary Charles with Forest’s Stuart Pearce thumping home the resulting free-kick to give his side the lead. Gascoigne, who should have been sent off, would eventually leave the field injured.

Mark Crossley then became only the second goalkeeper to save a penalty in the final when he kept out Gary Lineker’s effort. Paul Stewart did equalise in the second half before Forest suffered the cruel fate of Walker’s own goal deep into stoppage time.

Other memorable events to happen on this day

1971: The Montreal Canadiens beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in Game 7 to win the Stanley Cup.

1975: Rick Barry’s jumper puts Game 1 of the NBA Finals out of reach as Golden State defeat Washington 101-95.

2004: Randy Johnson, 40, becomes the oldest pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.
