  • New dawn: Rugby World Cup.

    The All Blacks kicked off rugby’s inaugural World Cup on home soil in impressive fashion, trouncing Italy 70-6 at Auckland’s Eden Park. Brian Lochore’s men, led by skipper David Kirk, ran in 12 tries against the Azzuri.

    Scrum-half Kirk scored two, as did wingers John Kirwan and Craig Green, while Grant Fox converted eight as well as adding two penalties.

    The men from the land of the long white cloud went on to hammer Fiji and Argentina in the pool as well as Scotland, Wales and finally France 29-9 in the final.

    HISTORY

    1994: Toronto, scheduled to enter the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1995-96, unveiled the Raptors as the team’s nickname.

    2003: In Fort Worth, Texas, Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam becomes the first woman to play the PGA Tour in 58 years.

    2008: Veteran Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer ends an 11-year association with Middlesbrough to join Fulham.
