  • Rajasthan celebrate their win.

After Sunrisers Hyderabad’s triumph last weekend it seems only apt to take a look back at the first IPL winners, Rajasthan Royals, who beat Chennai Super Kings on this day eight years ago.

It was a final for the ages. The Shane Warne led Royals remarkably made the final on the smallest budget but were up against M.S. Dhoni’s Chennai, who won their semi-final by nine wickets.

Put in to bat by Warne, Chennai put up a total of 163, with Suresh Raina top scoring with 43. With eight runs needed from the final over and with Warne and Sohail Tanvir out in the middle, it still could have gone either way.

But Tanvir held his nerve to hit the winning run off the last ball of the tournament.

    Other memorable events:

1983: Lester Piggott rode his record ninth Derby winner, Teenoso.

2002: A plane carrying disgraced former South Africa cricket captain Hansie Cronje crashed in Western Cape province, killing all on board.

1990: The Detroit Pistons beat the Trailblazers in Portland for first time in 16 years.

2012: Brendan Rodgers was named the new Liverpool manager.
